| Reduce Or Eliminate Your Exposure To Toxic |
Unfortunately, the United States is far behind Europe in this regard. In fact, the EU has made a thorough review and revision of its regulatory aesthetic requirements in 2003 and placed an absolute prohibition of certain ingredients, based on a growing body of evidence, have been identified as potentially hazardous to women pregnant women and their babies. Some of these ingredients are phthalates (used as solvents to soften plastics, which are hidden in danger "perfume"), bisphenol A (BPA found in some types of plastic used to make baby bottles and water bottles), and dioxane .
Because of these legislative changes, many U.S. companies and personal care cosmetics sold in European market forced to reformulate some of their products to meet the new stricter requirements. The catch? Instead of re-formulate these products for all markets they serve, they chose to re-formulate precisely the products sold in the EU. In other words, the same products that are marketed here is not reformulated! These are companies with very established brands here in the U.S.
If this is not enough to give pause, I do not know what it is. I think that the teaching here is that if you can not count on companies to "do the right thing" by their customers, then you only have yourself to the last line of defense. It is not necessarily a bad thing. With a little 'training, anyone can learn to interpret the labels of ingredients and claims, and to find the right combination of products to meet their needs, without sacrificing their health and well being of the environment.
In this sense, the two most important things you can do now to avoid or minimize the risk of toxicity:
1) Read and understand the ingredient labels on products you use, or before you buy
By law, manufacturers are required to list ingredients in descending order of concentration. That's why creams and lotions are generally water (or water) as the first ingredient listed. However, manufacturers are not required to report the quantity of each ingredient used, so if a product contains many ingredients is simply no way of knowing how to use each. This is where knowing the difference between natural and synthetic ingredients is very convenient.
2) to move as quickly as possible for truly natural personal care products
If you have not already made the change, then this is the right time to do it! If you have already started using "natural" products, but do not know how they are truly natural, here is a quick way to tell. Of natural personal care are those whose main ingredients are herbal. Truly natural products are those whose main ingredients are not combined with synthetic ingredients or petroleum products, additives, fillers or sneak the word "perfume".
Many companies are combined with natural and synthetic ingredients called "natural" to enjoy the latest trends in marketing. Even organic ingredients are sometimes combined with ingredients such as mineral oil, propylene glycol, petroleum jelly (the main ingredient in antifreeze), and parabens - to name a few. This practice is called "greenwashing." Be especially aware of lotions, moisturizers and other products whose water content is high, said to be 100% organic lotions are usually about 70% or more of water, there is no such thing as a lotion that is completely organic. In this case, you should look to see how many people is not the natural water content and / or organic to get an idea of how secure.
As you become more comfortable and knowledgeable to decipher the labels, your focus is on learning to identify and avoid or eliminate your exposure to ingredients that have been widely identified as either risky or just seem to be uncertain . You can learn more about this on the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics website. You can also search for specific products or companies on the site of the Skin Deep Environmental Working Group, where you will find a comprehensive database that includes thousands of famous and lesser-known body care products and cosmetics. Database Skin Deep is the first attempt of its kind in the catalog of ingredients in personal care products - most of which have never been tested for safety, and whose impact on our health are largely unknown.
The environmental group researched and reviewed all publicly available information about the ingredients listed on the products in their database and information used to rank the products on a scale of 1-10 for safety concerns based on their analysis . It is by no means a complete database or exhaustive, and error classification system on the side of exaggerating the potential health problems by relying heavily on the dangers specified in data sheets (MSDS ) of each component. These safety reports looking at the worst possible scenario that could result from repeated or even when exposed to large quantities of ingredients or in exceptional circumstances. For example, an ingredient that comes in powder form is a danger to the very large by inhalation, but when diluted in a liquid can not pose the same threat. If the EWG identified as a potential danger in the only factor to be marked as hazardous, regardless of their appearance in the finished product.
The assumption is that if it is dangerous to inhale large quantities, is dangerous to absorb into the skin, even in very small amounts - which may or may not be true.
However, it provides a useful guideline for the relative safety of different products and brands, and offers the opportunity to find new products that may not be readily available in commercial channels. In general, we find that the products of a higher risk of security for the charts usually contain a lot of questionable ingredients.
